SEIF Forum unpacks the future of carbon neutrality between China and Europe

Technology visionaries, business leaders, foreign economic counsellors, heads of commercial councils and government officials had gathered in Beijing and discussed the latest developments in the goals of carbon neutrality.

Sino-Europe InnoTech Forum was taken place on September 16, 2022, at Price Jun’s Mansion Hotel, Beijing, the forum convened in-depth discussions from technology, business, embassy, Non-government Organizations and government leaders about how to get to the goals of carbon neutrality. The forum is co-hosted by IDA China, Madrid Investment Attraction in Beijing, China-Britain Business Council, Biz Switzerland and the Wallonia Export & Investment Agency (AWEX) and was organized by BRICH Technology, a service provider focused on connected technologies and solutions for Chinese companies go global and foreign companies come to China.

“For a long time, China and Europe have been close economic and trade partners. In the first eight months of this year, the total trade value between China and the EU reached 3.75 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 9.5%; data from Eurostat shows that in the first half of the year, the 27 EU countries' trade volume with China was 413.9 billion euros, a year-on-year increase of 28.3%. Among them, the EU imported 301.7 billion euros from China, an increase of 43.3%.” said Meng Xin, President and Founder of BRICH Technology. “Although COVID-19 has hindered global climate action to a certain extent, the strategic communication and cooperation between China and Europe in climate and energy have been continuously strengthened. Han Lijuan, Chief Supervisor of China Association of Productivity Promotion Center, Former Science and Technology Counselor of the Embassy of China in Belgium, believes that "carbon neutrality and carbon peaking" is an important theme of the times, and the international community should realize it and carry out extensive cooperation, and share the latest scientific discoveries.

Zhuang Jia, Deputy Director of China Science and Technology Exchange Center, has shared views that the development of science and technology between China and the EU has a high strong complementarity in science and technology, so China-EU cooperation in science and technology is promising.

Alfonso Noriega, First Class Economic and Commercial Counsellor, Embassy of Spain in Beijing has introduced that Spain is the thirteenth largest economy in the world and the fourth largest in the European Union. It has an extensive network and ecosystem and has a presence in the entire industrial chain of renewable energy. Chinese companies can not only enter the European market through Spain but also enter the Latin American market.

Victor Cortizo, Deputy of Madrid Investment Attraction in Beijing, has shared that Madrid is active in cooperation with China in the Belt and Road Initiative and it has unique ideas on low-carbon development.

Gareth Hargadon, Head of Economic Section, Embassy of Ireland, Beijing, shared Ireland's experience in climate change, sustainable economy, etc., and he looked forward to the energy cooperation between China and Ireland.

Zhu Daocheng, Vice President of JA Solar, has mentioned that although Europe is in a leading position in the application of renewable energy, compared with the proportion of traditional fossil energy, there is still huge room for its renewable energy development.

Wang Guofeng, Component R&D General Manager of GCL System Integration Technology, has mentioned that the sea surface photovoltaic products currently developed by GCL have the characteristics of anti-corrosion, wind and wave resistance, and have passed the French carbon footprint certification.

Kiran Patel, Senior Director of China-Britain Business Council, has shared that in the UK, banks are working to reduce energy use, car manufacturers are moving from internal combustion engines to energy vehicles, hotels are reducing plastic use, and energy companies are transitioning towards carbon neutrality and more. And there is still room for further cooperation between China and UK.

Connie Way, Executive Director China of Biz Switzerland, has mentioned that in terms of clean energy, Switzerland is one of the countries to introduce relevant policies and regulations. And the Forward-looking environmental law has a far-reaching influence on Switzerland.

Zhuang Yinghong, Director of Global Marketing of Risen Energy, has mentioned that Heterojunction is an effective means to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, and it is also the trend of industrial technology and an inevitable choice for high-efficiency solar cells.

Xu Hailiang, Vice President of TÜV, has analyzed the background of carbon neutrality and carbon peaking and made photovoltaic industry development cases more clear.

Wu Bixuan, Senior Partner of Hiways Law Firm, believes that whether carbon tariffs or the circular economy action plan in the European market, it will bring pressure on enterprises to carbon neutrality and carbon peaking, reduce emissions, and pressure from trade measures.
