Carbon neutrality: Strategy and actions in achieving a more sustainable Ireland (excerpt)
Gareth Hargadon, Economic Counsellor, Embassy of Ireland in Beijing
China is a critical actor in the climate and biodiversity space and in particular has shown significant leadership on biodiversity.
It is also positive to see China’s significant progress towards the target of increasing forest coverage with the announcement in May this year of the country’s plan to contribute to planting, conserving, restoring and managing 70 billion trees by 2030.
Ireland, for one, stands ready to explore new avenues for cooperation in this arena with China and other global partner.
Last year, Ireland launched its first national Sustainable Finance Roadmap. The Roadmap sets out 18 actions that together aim to make Ireland an international hub for sustainable finance by 2025. That way, we can accelerate the transition to carbon neutrality domestically, and help to drive it internationally, while bringing growth, jobs and expertise to Ireland.
This Roadmap was developed through close co-operation between public and private sector stakeholders, and was informed by research identifying sustainable finance best practices from around the world.
The Roadmap has measures targeted at five key areas:
Developing Talent
Industry readiness
Leveraging Digital
Enabling Environment, and
Promotion and Communication
